2008 CREEKSIDE ROUNDUP EQUESTRIAN EVENTS
A Subcommittee of
THE FRANKLINVILLE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
September 7 @ 8:00 AM Registration begins; Pull starts at 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM --- Farm Draft Horse Log Pulling Contest at Creekside Arena
Franklinville is located in the northeast corner of Cattaraugus County in the western Southern Tier. Since 2003 the community of Franklinville has been working to make Franklinville a "Horse Friendly Community". In 2006 the Cattaraugus County Legislature created a county-wide Equine Advisory Committee reporting directly to the Legislature. That committee is attempting to provide a clearing house to organize and publicise all equine events in the county. The committee is also in the process of developing a county map of all horse trails, equine businesses, and stables. With great support from the Legislature, the local communities, and the equine businesses in the county, we hope to make Cattaraugus County and our Village of Franklinville an equine destination.
The person who coordinates the calendar of events at the County level is Becky Smith. Her e-mail address is: Becky Smith‏ blsmith@cattco.org

FALL FESTIVAL OF DRESSAGE
$46,000 Purse
for benefit of
JOSLIN DIABETES CENTER
“Conquering Diabetes in All of Its Forms
Wednesday through Sunday ~ September 10 / 11 / 12 / 13 / 14, 2008 ~ HITS on the Hudson, Saugerties NY
Joslin Diabetes Center and New England Dressage Association have joined hands to provide diabetes awareness and education to the
equestrian community. Established in 1898, 23 years before insulin was identified, Joslin Diabetes Center has become the undisputed
world leader in diabetic research, treatment, and patient and professional education. As a nonprofit organization, Joslin benefits from the
generosity of donors in advancing its mission. Visit: www. joslin.org.
The Festival consists of four competitions, featuring 600 horses competing in classes from Training Level, the first step on the dressage
ladder, to Grand Prix, the pinnacle of the sport as seen at the Olympic Games.
Within this event are the New England Region 8 Regional Championships sponsored by the Great American Insurance Group and
United States Dressage Federation, and recognized by US Equestrian Federation. Championship classes will be held Thursday through
Sunday, featuring freestyle championships on Friday and Sunday.
Secondly, this event is one of the few internationally recognized American competitions (CDI-W J/Y Saugerties) recognized by the
Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). International competitors earn scores toward representing their countries at competitions such
as the World Games or the Olympics. Specifically, Fall Festival is a qualifying event for the 2009 USEF Grand Prix and Intermediaire I
Championships and for the US Grand Prix Freestyle Championship which selects the American representative at the annual FEI World
Cup competition. On Thursday afternoon the International Competition begins with the formal inspection of the horses by FEI Officials,
certifying their identity and their fitness to compete. Riders from Denmark, Israel, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada and other
countries will compete. Classes are held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with the Grand Prix de Dressage on Saturday afternoon and the
crowd favorite Grand Prix Special and musical freestyles Sunday afternoon.
Thirdly, all day Wednesday and Thursday morning, in the Sport Horse Breed Show horses (from weanlings to stallions) are shown "in
hand". There are special classes for Amateur Handlers, IBC classes for specific breeds of horses, and classes for ponies. This
competition is a both a qualifier for and regional finals for the USDF Breeders Championship New England Series also sponsored by
Great American; finals classes will be held Thursday morning just following the $3,500 New England Sport Horse Breeder's Futurity.
Finally, Thursday through Sunday a National Competition features hundreds of local competitors, amateurs and professionals, as well as
riders who have competed at the Olympics, the FEI World Cup, the World Games and the Pan American Games. Within this competition,
the Fall Festival Sweepstakes takes place, with final awards late on Friday late afternoon. On Sunday high scoring performers will be
selected for the Adult Amateur Championships and the Junior/Young Rider Championships.
Sunday features all levels, national and International, as well as regional championship classes. Freestyles will be held for Young Riders,
Intermediate and Grand Prix competitors, riding their horses to music in specially choreographed programs reminiscent of the famous
“dancing” Lipizzan horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Because there are very few competitions in this country featuring world
class horses and musical rides, ringside will be packed with excited spectators. Everyone loves to watch!
A large Equestrian Trade Fair will be held, featuring artists, horse supplies, boutiques, trailers.

“NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE INTENTIONS, HOW GOOD THE
TRAINER, HOW GOOD THE EQUIPMENT OR HEALTH CARE OR
ENVIRONMENT——IF THE FOUNDATION IS NOT SOLID, NOTHING ELSE
IS GOING TO BE QUITE RIGHT.”
Scott’s exceptionally quiet, gentle, and straightforward training style has
proven to be very effective with all types and ages of horses. He does not
use shortcuts, gimmicky equipment, or “ten easy steps.” While never
utilizing force or fear, these common-sense methods will help the rider
achieve partnership with his or her horse using the smallest of efforts
based on the concepts of feel, timing, balance, release, and reward.
The ultimate goal is to produce a truly versatile horse——one that can hold down a “real” job on a farm
or ranch, compete at the big events or on the weekends, and be steady and reliable for the kids after school.
Born into a legacy of horsemanship, Scott's philosophy on raising cattle and horses is deeply rooted in
his family's more than 120 years of experience as ranchers in Nebraska. His current stallion, Lil Wildcat, is on
the leading sires list for reined cowhorses. In addition to producing champions in cutting, reining, and reined
cowhorse—plus many great ranch horses——Scott’s horses have earned a reputation as quiet, calm horses that
take care of their riders.
Scott’s work is heavily influenced by Tom and Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman, who
may be called practitioners of foundation horsemanship, vaquero horsemanship, or, more loosely,
natural horsemanship.

the Fall Festival Sweepstakes takes place, with final awards late on Friday late afternoon.

2008 CREEKSIDE ROUNDUP EQUESTRIAN EVENTS
A Subcommittee of
THE FRANKLINVILLE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
September 14 @ 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM --- Fall Carriage Drive and Box Social on Country roads; The drive will begin at 11:00 Am with the Box Social picnic lunch at 12:30 PM.
